an informal blog of experience with the game

Good lord, it took forever to get myself to sit down and crank this thing out, but my Diablo II review is finally online. I tried hard to be objective and not just bitter, and I think I succeeded. I think it's fair.

I've setup a Roger Wilco channel on the server for Diablo2. If you've got Roger Wilco already, just use 216.99.207.137 as the IP. If you don't have it, go to the Diablo2 page and follow the directions.

A few words regarding bandwidth: the Diablo2 server is really just a chat server. FSGS emulates battle.net, and battle.net emulates a chat server. Once someone starts a game, the game is hosted on that box -- not the FSGS server. Regarding the trouble I was having with connectivity and Diablo2, turns out that you cannot host Diablo2 behind a proxy. For some reason, Blizzard is unable to accomplish what virtually every other game developer is able to do. Perhaps I'm being harsh. After all, I've never coded a client/server app, so I'm sure I can't appreciate how horribly hard it must have been to develop a robust multiplayer engine in just 3 years. And of course, in all fairness, the whole thing really has caught Blizzard off guard. Who knew that Diablo2 was going to sell millions upon millions of copies?
