Tools of Choice on Linux

Categorized listing of preferred tools on Linux.

This list represents an evolving collection of Linux applications that I've identified as best-of-class (or, perhaps, only-in-class) for various user activities.  It is analogous to those "Convert to Linux from Windows" articles you might have seen, that attempt to identify applications equivalent to those that people regularly use and depend upon when doing their computing in Windows.

I've constructed this list on an as-needed basis, meaning that when I encounter the need to do something on Linux that I've not done before, I tend to do a little investigation first to discover the options, and then proceed to trial them briefly or just pick one outright based on features/support/reputation/etc..  I'll then make a quick note of the result here.  Sometimes, though, I may add something that I've merely come across in passing and haven't used or need to use but want to make a note of it here for future reference.
